What a dynamic QR code actually is

A dynamic QR code does not normally encode your final destination into the visible pattern. It encodes a short redirect URL instead. When somebody scans it, the scanner opens the redirect, the redirect service looks up the current destination, and the visitor is sent there.

Because the destination lives behind the redirect rather than inside the ink, it can be changed later without touching the printed image. That single indirection is the entire difference between a static and a dynamic code.

If the destination is genuinely never going to change and you do not need redirect-level analytics, a static code is the simpler answer. If printing is expensive, the destination might move, or you need to measure which placement produced the scans, dynamic gives you more control.

The practical reason to use one: printing creates lock-in

Before printing, changing a URL costs nothing. After printing 500 flyers, 200 table cards, 50 signs or several thousand product inserts, changing that URL is a physical problem with a physical invoice attached.

A static code makes the destination part of the printed asset. A dynamic code keeps them apart, so the thing that is cheap to change stays cheap to change:

How to create a dynamic QR code with VastQR

  1. Enter the destination you actually want
    Start from the real URL, not a placeholder. Testing the real page now is how you find out that it redirects oddly, loads slowly or is unusable on a phone — rather than finding out after the run.
  2. Create the code
    VastQR generates a code tied to a managed redirect. The printed image points at that redirect; the destination stays editable in your account.
  3. Test it before it is published anywhere
    Scan it from more than one phone if it is going somewhere public, and check that it reads at the distance people will actually use, that the right page opens, that the page works on mobile, that any campaign parameters survive the redirect, that the destination is HTTPS, and that nothing behind it demands an unexpected login.
  4. Download the format your workflow needs
    PNG, SVG and PDF. SVG or PDF when a designer or printer wants vector-friendly output; PNG when the final size is already known and the pixel count is sufficient for it.
  5. Print without losing the quiet zone
    A code needs clear space around it so the scanner can tell where the pattern begins. Nothing — text, borders, artwork, a crop line — should sit against the modules.

    Physical size and margin are their own subject with their own arithmetic. Use the print sizing guide rather than judging from a screen preview.

  6. Change the destination later, if you need to
    Open the code and update where it points. The printed image does not have to be regenerated because the destination moved. That is the operational benefit the whole approach exists for.

The distinction that matters is between the printed image and the destination behind it. The second is editable. The first is ink.

If the printed call-to-action says “Scan for the summer menu” and the redirect now points somewhere unrelated, the code works and the customer is still confused. Treat the destination and the printed message as one journey, and re-read the printed line every time you change where it goes.

What the analytics can tell you, and what they cannot

Because scans pass through a redirect, the request can be recorded before the visitor is forwarded. VastQR reports scan trends over 7, 30 or 90 days, performance by individual code, device type and operating-system family, city where the data was available, and a coverage figure for each of those so you can see how much of the period each panel actually speaks for.

Two limits are worth stating plainly, because most QR marketing does not.

A scan is not a person

The same person can scan the same code three times. “1,000 scans” is one thousand recorded events, not one thousand people, and there is no verified unique-person metric behind it.

Not every request is human

Link previews, crawlers, security scanners and uptime checks all reach redirect URLs. VastQR classifies the automated traffic it recognises and lets you exclude it from a second view — but the events that remain are not thereby verified humans. A classifier reads a user-agent string; automation that does not announce itself is not recognised.

A dynamic code and a UTM tag solve different problems

A dynamic QR code controls the redirect. UTM parameters help an analytics platform attribute a visit to a source, medium and campaign once the page loads. They are complementary, and using one does not replace the other.

Do not expect the two datasets to agree. A redirect can be requested without a complete analytics session ever being created on the destination — the visitor closes the tab, the page never finishes loading, the request was automated. Both numbers can be right at once.

When a static code is the better answer

Dynamic is not automatically better, and a page selling dynamic codes should say so.

Choose static when

  • the encoded information genuinely should never change
  • you do not want the code to depend on any redirect provider
  • you do not need redirect-level scan analytics
  • the content can be encoded directly and permanently
  • long-term independence matters more than editability

A static code containing a durable URL on a domain you control is a very robust choice. Use dynamic when the cost of being wrong after printing is greater than the cost of depending on a hosted redirect. That is the decision rule; everything else is detail.

What happens if the redirect service ends

This is the question to ask before a large print run, of any provider including this one. A dynamic code depends on the redirect behind it, and providers differ in what happens when a trial, plan or account ends.

  • does the scan history remain available?
  • does resubscribing restore the same printed codes?

The last row is the one nobody asks and everybody regrets. It is also the only one on this list that no provider can fix for you.

Before you approve the print run

  • the destination opens correctly, from a phone, on cellular data
  • the code has been tested on more than one handset
  • the code has been tested at its final printed size
  • the quiet zone survived the layout
  • contrast is strong enough for the material and the lighting
  • the code does not cross a fold, seam or trim line
  • the printed call-to-action still matches the destination
  • you have decided consciously between static independence and dynamic editability
  • you know what your provider does when the plan ends
  • you have a record of which code is on which physical placement

What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code sends the scanner through a managed redirect instead of encoding the final destination in the printed pattern. Because the destination is stored behind that redirect, it can be changed later without replacing the printed image.
Can I change a dynamic QR code after printing?
You can change the destination behind it. The printed pattern itself never changes and does not need to — that is the whole point of the redirect. What does not change automatically is the printed message around the code, which is a separate problem worth planning for.
Do dynamic QR codes expire?
The image has no built-in expiry date. The dependency is the redirect service behind it: a provider can stop or pause redirects when an account, plan or entitlement ends, and that is what actually determines whether a printed code keeps resolving.
